Position Scope: 

Accountable to the Regional Operations Manager, the Manager, Peat Bog Resourcing participates as an integral member of the Canada Growing Media Supply Chain Operations team and performs duties in accordance with the mandate and priorities of Scotts Canada Ltd. works with local Peat sites, Scotts Canada Operations team, and various stakeholders.

Position Overview: 

The Manager, Peat Bog Resourcing coordinates and executes the application and tracking of bog permits, lease renewals and titles related to peat harvesting. Manages area operations that include long term development and restoration & rehabilitation plans, as well as coordinates and participates in bog site operations. The incumbent will also be required to support bog expansion operations including new capital requirements, mapping peat availability, harvesting capacity and life cycle management requirements, in addition to coordinating, gathering measurements required for the company’s Quality, Regulatory and Environmental Health & Safety units. In this role the incumbent will also interact with various stakeholders, including provincial and federal government departments.

This role may be required to work on holidays and weekends from time to time.

Specific Accountabilities: 

  • Applying for and tracking local Bog Lease renewals. Liaise with Scotts Plant Managers for coordination of documentation requirements needed;
  • Manage area operations that include, long term development and restoration plans;
  • Conduct and acquire data at the various peat and humus production sites, through inventories and sampling (which may include but not limited to peat & humus characteristics, water quality, water monitoring, and monitoring of animal populations, etc.);
  • Ensure Execution of Bog development and restoration tasks, execute permit requirements – sampling, testing, reporting;
  • Enter Bog lease requirements in SORT Compliance Calendar assigning owners, dates, frequency, etc.;
  • Coordinate and participate in site audits, where necessary to make sure that sites are compliant with applicable legislation and existing permits for operations;
  • Support Bog expansion operations including new capital requirements, mapping Peat & Humus availability, harvesting capacity and life cycle management requirements;
  • Lead for Peat & Humus Operations, supporting regional and local sustainability efforts;
  • Oversee rented land agreements, and royalty payments based on yearly harvest;
  • Coordinate and gather measurements required for Quality, Regulatory and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS);
  • Support Operational field teams with permits, regarding various issues and requirements for operational purposes;
  • Maintain and establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) where required specific to peat bog and baling operations;
  • Attends subject matter workshops, presentations and meetings as directed;
  • Carry out any additional duties as assigned.

Requisite Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree preferably in Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Knowledge of relevant Federal and Provincial legislation, policies and programs is an asset;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French, with the ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, and demonstrated  facilitation and leadership skills;
  • Proven experience and ability in conducting research, analysis and writing position papers or summary reports is essential to being successful in this position;
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence and aptitude, including the ability to think and interact strategically and innovatively while exercising sound judgment and cooperation with other team members;
  • The ability to work with a variety of individuals, including professionals and non-professionals, to provide information, influence discussion and solicit decisions;
  • Capacity to work independently and with limited supervision;
  • Ability to work and interact as a team member, while respecting lines of authority and reporting requirements;
    Strong planning & organization skills.
